Pullman seems to be trying to ferment a broadsheet revolution at the moment. Here he is in the Independent opining that "Institutionalised paranoia is the enemy of a thriving society".

To be honest, though I mostly agree with the sentiment, the two pieces read like some sixth-form manifesto.

Pullman captures the tone, mood and voice of both 'them' and 'us' perfectly. It's not hard to see why a snot-rag like Murdoch's Times pulled it. Way too close to the bone.
