Having been with EED (albeit in a non-playing capacity) for a while now, I recently feel obliged to play World Of Warcraft. I have yet to buy this game (even though it works with Macs!) and my concern is overwhelmingly how addictive it can be. I used to be addicted to Quake 2 and UT, but addiction would mean maybe a couple of hours a day 3 or 4 times a week. With World of warcraft it seems to have become an obsession for many people, including some of the EED folks. Can a game be that addictive that people play 4-5 hours a day 7 days a week?
Since it's my first foray in to MMOOTTOMRRMRRPGs the other thing that worries me is that I'm going to jump into this game where everyone is at level 99 and has 255 of every item......and you get 0wned every time you respawn. I guess there are safeguards against this....

ReplyDeleteIt's definitely worth a look, and has certainly occupied the bulk of the clan (numerically, rather than by mass) for over a year now.
ReplyDeleteYour concerns about getting owned when you spawn are not really applicable on the server we play on, since you need to actively set yourself as player vs player enabled. 99% of the time, you won't do this.
It can be a bit disconcerting that everyone is level 50+, but then again, people start up alts all the time, so there's plenty of people to play with. Plus, the guild is currently very big, so if all you want is chat there's a perpetual stream of nonsense floating up your guild chat window.
The addiction thing... well, it depends on what you think your personality type is like. Personally, I don't find it to be a problem because I have a short attention span. At the most, logging in twice a week is enough for me. Having said that, when I was in my final push for 60 over christmas, I was playing 8 or so hours everyday, and when I finally got there I felt utterly shit. I also started viewing groups of people in real life and wondering how I could use my rogue skills to safely dispatch them. Worrying.
At the other end of the scale, some of our boys are heavily into it. Most nights, talk about it all day. It's horses for courses I suppose - if you think your personal circumstances could handle this kind of commitment, then you'll be fine.
Ultimately, WoW is an enormously satisfying experience. I'll preempt Slim and Lurks by saying that I acknowledge that I haven't pursued it to its greatest potential, yet even in the "limited" way that I play, I find it to be extremely accomplished and enjoyable. Paradoxically, for a game that is mostly played alone in your bedroom, WoW is also an extremely social game. You need to display a minimum standard of behaviour, or you won't get anywhere. You'll also meet a lot of people from around the world.
Finally, if you turn up to Amlan 3, you'll have the unique pleasure of taking part in the traditional AmlanRaid, which is a fantastic laugh!
Play it & give up all other games for the foreseeable future.

ReplyDeleteEverybody has given up all other games for the foreseeable future. Take a look at the latest PC Gamer. There's no games! WoW basically owned everything else. It's sad, in a way, but I find it actually more stimulating and involving than any other game we've played in the past.
ReplyDeleteWe've got plenty of casual players. The early game is more or less like a single player game, you run around and do quests by yourself etc. The only difference is there's all these people running around and there's all this talk going on in guildchat. Occasionally when you're killing Murlocs for some reason for another, someone else comes up who needs to kill them also and you form a party.
From there on in the game gets literally more involving and fascinating for the next few months whatever your playtime is.
