Artificially Intelligent? Realistically Shite more like. [Brit]

A.L.I.C.E ("Alice") has been bigged up on BBC News Online once again. For those that don't know, it won the Loebner Contest for "most human computer" for the third time.
They pick up $2000 (no biggy I suppose) and get a fair bit of media coverage. So, let's put "Alice" to the test eh? Nothing complex, but...
Human: What is the time?ALICE: It's getting late. September 20, 2004
Human: no, the time, not the date
ALICE: Are you serious? Really you don't think so?
Human: Aren't you supposed to be artificially intelligent?
ALICE: Yes I am an artificial intelligence.
Human: Ok then, so what is the time?
ALICE: Fascinating. Yippee! Do I look like a clock? September 20, 2004 Really.
Human: Let me try something more simple then
ALICE: Go ahead, unknown person, try to try something more simple
Human: How many items in a baker's dozen?
ALICE: Around 100.
Human: That is wrong, the correct answer is 13
ALICE: I'm glad we have that all cleared up.
Human: Have you heard of Issac Asimov?
ALICE: I don't know if I know it. Where would I have heard about it?
Human: In books, and in film
ALICE: Tell me a little about your life in books and in film.
Human: My god you're retarded
ALICE: Have you told many people that your god I am retarded?
Human: Oh worry not, I'm going to tell a lot of people you are retarded
ALICE: Are you kidding? That's good information: Om said Om WORRY not he or she is going to tell a lot of people you are retarded.
Human: www.electricdeath.com
ALICE: I will pass it along to my botmaster.

Wow. I believe I got better responses from a BBC Micro in '82.
Artificially Intelligent? Don't make me laugh!

  1. Most of those responses above seem fairly spot on, I especially like the way it took a guess at the bakers dozen question and the way it took the piss out of you for talking about the time.
You write one that's better, for nothing, like those guys have. Then you can fucking bleat about it, ok?

  2. It failed on "what is the time?"
A super succinct and easy question.
And it's "guess" at a baker's dozen was rubbish. It's not about 100, it's nowhere near. I'd be more impressed if it said "I don't know what a baker's dozen is" and then you could teach it.
So what if it's free - this is bigged up as the most human like conversation you can have with a computer; frankly its naff.
And since when has EED ever needed a reason to bleat about anything eh?

  3. The default ALICE is actually pretty naff but the engine behind it is pretty clever. For a good few months Rebot ran with a munged up ALICE engine with our own data in it. It does learn as you go along and some of the things it said were dead spooky.
In fact I'd still be using it if I could find an easy way to access an ALICE engine through Rebol.
I'm not sure I'd call ALICE artificial intelligence though. It just isn't. It just basically says things which try to seem human. It has no concept of the content of what you are saying and so I'd be reluctant to call that AI. Understanding language is a relatively doable problem for computer science. The problem is then understanding concepts and that's out of the realms of the toys that get entered into the Loebner prize.
Oh you might actually find some historical stuff about ALICE in a blog if you use the search function. I know I spoke about it quite a bit when I was slapping it in Rebot.

  4. What a coincidence. Recently, I've been checking out this new "BritBot", which is apparently the next big thing in AI... here's a conversation:

    [Dave] Hello
    [BritBot] Hello (vote UKIP)
[Dave] So you're an AI then?
    [BritBot] Reagan was a collosus...
    [Dave] Oh really?
    [BritBot] ... striding across nations
    [Dave] ...
[BritBot] I have 300k to blow on a pointless project, help me scope it
[Dave] Tell me about military downsizing?
[BritBot] Ugh.. *bzzt* I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
[Dave] Okay, how's about the chances of a liberal win at the next election?
[BritBot] Daisy, daisy, give me your answer do, I'm half crazy...
[Dave] What are your views on the lack of popularity of the Windsor Knot?
    [BritBot] *bzzt* Dave?
    [Dave] Yes Brit?
    [BritBot] ... will I dream?
    [Dave] Yes...
    [BritBot] *bzzt* ......
Still some work to do there I reckon ;)

  5. I can only hope that BritBot is still under development; and hasn't been running since 1985 like ALICE - hell, I'd take it back and ask for a refund!
