Winamp 5 [lurks]

Quick thing. I'm stressing my CPU as part of another project I'll blog about soon, and I happen to be gazing at my task list. What do I spy? WinAmp chewing 10-15% CPU. This is on a 3.2GHz P4. As Am points out, we used to play Quake on those sort of cycles...

Anyhow, I poke around the settings and pull up properties on the DirectSound output plug in. Enable hardware acceleration on that page. Restart. 0-1% CPU. You guys might wanna do that...

  1. I'm using WinAmp Classic. What's 5 got that's worth me upgrading? Classic is small, functional, quick. What more do you need?

  2. The auto fade. The built-in hot-keys which I needed a plug-in for before. Also prefer the skin because you can resize it horizontally, excellent for transcribing interviews.

  3. I'm running winamp 5 and on a 2400+ athlon, the cpu useage was 1-2% with a spike at times and little difference when I switched on hardware acceleration. What stuff do you have running beyond the basic player?

  4. Fully loading the machine. Could just be some HT anomaly. There's no other plug-ins running here. I also didn't see this much CPU use in Winamp at work and that has a DSP plug-in running to compress dynamic range for the office jukebox system.

  5. Ath 1500XP here, Winamp 5.01 and without the hardware accel enabled Winamp didn't hit as high as 1%... perhaps weird HT thing? Or sth to do with where the sound source is coming from?

  6. No CPU issue here with Winamp 5.03 (ctaud2k.sys v5.12.1.252)

  7. Do you find it takes an age to load up? Even the lite version exhibits the same tardyness. I would go back to 2 but I wanna be in the big boys club.
Speaking of things to improve loading time, have you seen that homebrew thing for Adobe Reader that stiffs all the plugins down to the ones you actually need? PDFs load in an instant, it's ace.

  8. not used Winamp since itunes came out on the PC, maybe its time to have a look at it again - tho Im a bit of an itunes fanboi so its gonna have to be the new best thing evah to stay installed for long :)

  9. Well, iTunes is fine for numpties but it doesn't even have any of the very basic bolt on features of Winamp. Ages to load up? Can't say I've noticed that.
Homebrew thing for Adobe Reader... that sounds interesting, can you clue me in on that? I was actually giving Adobe shit about that (and broken things in PS Elements 2.0) a couple of weeks ago.

  10. If you want Adobe Acrobat 6 Reader to load quicker, move all the plugins into the 'optional' directory. Sigh bitches!

  11. The Adobe Reader speedup is the first item here www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk
Beej's answer seems eminently sensible, mind.

  12. So why doesn't the fucking application load the plugins when it needs to use them?
