Emusic, we loved it! A monthly sub got you access to a proper music service which specialised in lots of underground stuff you wouldn't ordinarily hear. Also there was no lame DRM shit, just vanilla MP3 and proper VBR as well. Your monthly fee got you as much as you could download. They stopped people from being stupid by forcing you to use a little download app which would only download one tune at a time. Not a bad idea, worked well. Good value, top stuff.
Unfortunately they got bought out and then without warning, announced the following:
Unless you visit the link below and notify us of your intention to cancel your subscription prior to November 8, 2003, your Emusic subscription will convert into Emusic Plus. Under Emusic Plus, you will be billed $14.99 per month for access to the service with no minimum monthly commitment, but you will be limited to no more than 65 downloads during your monthly billing cycle.
Actually, I got another e-mail offering me $9.99 for 40 a month initially. At any rate, that's utterly ridiculous. If it was all grade A material on there, then maybe but they just don't have the content. Emusic was all about speculative downloads. You'd leech some stuff and have a listen at your leisure. Most of it was, quite frankly, turd. However there were some gems in the rough and that made it worthwhile.
But a tenner a month (in real money) for 65 tracks? Fuck that.
The mass cancellations began, of course, and they took their forums down - the pussies. I and pretty much everyone else resolved to leech like a bastard for the time remaining. Emusic cottoned on to that and cancelled my account immediately (violating what they had said they would do when I cancelled the acocunt) and refunded me 50c to my credit card.
My god, what a complete and utter shower of arseholes.

Yeah, I've been royally screwed by eMusic as well... before and after the change over. They've taken me for good sums of money due to faults of their own. I never could get a reply from customer support. If I wasn't so lazy I'd sue their asses off. Warning to anyone contemplating the eMusic service - DON'T! They're a bunch of motherfuckers who are greedy assholes.
ReplyDeleteI got a free gift card, ended up just throwing it away. all the free music sucks, what a waste of the searching through that awful site.
ReplyDeleteI signed up for an emusic account a year ago or so and well they got me for $220.00. I downloaded NOTHING from their site, their site sucks to begin with if you have heard of anything on their site then u got me. I contacted customer support and they said sure we will cancel your account, and no you never downloaded anything from us, but as a gesture of good faith we are going to allow you to download 150 songs in the next 5 days. Nice I hope you assholes can handle the KARMA coming your way. The great news is companies like yours that survive by conning people don't last long term. Anyone want advice or emails I have received from them please email me jim@jimmora.com.
ReplyDeleteyup they suck. they\'re the worst. don\'t subscribe, unless you want those hard-to-find bjork karoake tracks you\'ve been looking for everywhere.
ReplyDeletei had to switch some account information and they terminated my account, wouldn\'t refund the money, and wouldn\'t reinstate the downloads i had already bought.
i\'m going straight to the better business bureau. what a horrible company.
ReplyDeleteI just got a 40 free downloads card and this site sucks big time!
Every "real" mainstream artist listing is "Sung in the style of" or Karaoke!
The FTC should shut these jokers down!
ReplyDeleteTHEY HAVE THE PIXIES!AND THE OTHERS ASK YOU TO GET A RHAPSODY PLAYER?AND THEY ASK YOU FOR IPOD?I DONT HAVE ANY OF THOSECHEERS EMUSIC!
ReplyDeleteTHEY HAVE FUCK ALL!
AND THE OTHERS ASK YOU TO GET A RHAPSODY PLAYER?
AND THEY ASK YOU FOR IPOD?
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANS
GET SCREWED EMUSIC!
ReplyDeleteE-Music Totally RUDE! Simple facts, Got the 50 free songs program, got 7 songs, so I called them, they told me I got 63. Now I understand that when you click a song or whole album it comes off your account, BUT, why if I wanted 3 albums 12-14 songs each, were there 63 songs downloaded? Why when I logged on the following morning I had 14 left when I signed for 14 a month did the rude wench tell me I got 63 UMM HELLO 50 + 14 = 64!
That is ONE over! And If I did download 63 WHY oh WHY did it say I had 14 left the next day????????? Wouldn't I have -1?????
NO computers are not perfect, but their customer service woman started getting mouthy repeating "You don't understand!" OMG If you read this, just buy your cd's or get em on LIMEWIRE! They wonder why we steal music? Companies dont give a shit about their customers! HACK THEM and e-mail me I will take you flying for free! HA!!!

ReplyDeleteI tried the trial, looked around, didn't see too much for me, got a few songs and cancelled well before the 14 days was up. No big... Received my confirmation that the account was cancelled -- then got hit for $9.99. Called the number on my bank statement -- not theirs. Went to their "contact us" link. Filled out the info. Got a canned response that they had a big volume of messages and might take some time. No further reply. Got hit for ANOTHER $9.99. And I have no way of talking to anyone on the phone about this BS!! I want my money back!!
I'm going to my local TV news Trouble Shooter so they'll do a spot on these folks so others won't get screwed!

ReplyDeleteSame exact thing happened to me. They suck. I was basically told that I didn't sign up for a free trial when I signed up through a card of free downloads that I received from Lane Bryant so I wasn't getting my money back. I told them that obviously the company needs the $10 more than I so good luck...they won't be around for long.
EMUSIC SUCKS!!!THEY ROB YOU - IF YOU DON'T TAKE YOUR DOWNLOADS WITHIN THE MONTH, THEY DISAPPEAR - I SIGNED ON BEFORE THEY LISTED THIS ON THE SITE, NOW I'M OUT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS WITH VERY LITTLE MUSIC TO SHOW FOR IT.
